His relationship with Susan Weil

Robert Rauschenberg and Susan Weil have a fascinating relationship that is one among the most memorable of the 1960s. Rauschenberg & Weil met in Paris while both were attending the Academie Julian. Later, they both studied at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and the Art Students League in New York. Their marriage lasted from 1950 to 1952. Weil and Rauschenberg created a series of paintings called Blueprints, produced with a monoprint technique. They were both pioneers of the blueprint technique in the art world.

His involvement in performance art

Robert Rauschenberg was an American artist. He is most well known for his performance and assemblage art. Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur Texas. He was named Robert after his father. His grandfather, a German immigrant, was his family. His father worked as a utility worker while his mother was skilled at sewing skirts and shirts with scraps. He toured around the world with Merce Cunningham Dance Company. He also exhibited his works at Whitechapel Galleries and the Venice Biennale. He collaborated with Cy Twombly and John Cage.

His relationship to Billy Kluver

Robert Rauschenberg met Billy Kluver, a Bell Telephone Laboratories engineer. It was a fruitful relationship that both of them started in the 1960s. Their shared interests in technology, art and science were apparent in the work they produced, but their relationship was less than perfect. Kluver was interested in the importance of artists' involvement in technological advances, and in the value of working with engineers. He began exploring New York City's artistic scene and to make friends with key figures in the new arts.

His monochromatic White Paintings

In 1951, Rauschenberg created a series of monochromatic works. In the tradition of minimalist art, these works reduced painting to its most basic element, resulting in a sense of pure experience. Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery, October 1953 was their first public display. John Cage was impressed by the "White Paintings", which were able to detect ambient events and shadows. You can alter them as you wish.

His research on space flight

The 1960s marked the era of human space flight, and Robert Rauschenberg was among the leading artists of the time. Inspired by the new technology, he sought to capture the excitement of manned space flights with his paintings. His paintings of astronauts in outer space reminded him of a multidimensional spacewalk. Astronauts were a symbol and inspiration for exploration and hope. He was also fascinated by the culture associated with rocket launches and moon landings.
